What happens when piano and electronics meet on equal footing in terms of sound? When they alternate nimbly between accompaniment, solo moments and fusion? These questions were the motivation behind the creation of Ako Amo's debut album. «What's the Sound of a Dream?» is composed ambient music for critical dreamers, for listeners who dare to lose themselves in thought, even at the risk of bumping their heads.
The Swiss-based duo Ako Amo – consisting of Martin Reck (electronics) and Olivia Zaugg (piano) – began as an ambitious live interpretation of «Uoon I» by Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto. To achieve this, they built their own electronic instruments capable of synthesising the sounds of the piece in real time.
In the years that followed, this formed the basis for their own performative compositional practice and aesthetic with a distinctive sound language: early digital electronics, pictorial piano sounds, piano processing and sensitive sound design characterise the Ako Amo sound. Ako Amo combines Olivia Zaugg's classical piano practice and Martin Reck's background in electroacoustics with a curiosity for the new and accessible.
