Bold & Just

In «Bold & Just», the Proton Ensemble presents two new works by Saad Haddad and Marc Sabat. Their compositions bring together two extraordinary instruments: the fascinating 36-note Arciorgano by Nicola Vicentino, reconstructed by Basel-based «Studio 31+», and, as a contrast, the innovative electronic musical instrument Lumatone, which has a total of 280 hexagonal keys.

«The Tree» is the allegorical music of a tree: between earth and atmosphere, between soil and clouds, adorned with the recurring transience of autumn. Sabat’s music is rooted in American folk and in the work of a Mexican music pioneer; it is supported by the technical possibilities of the Lumatone, whose setup of brightly glowing hexagonal keys can represent the 81 subtle pitch shades of the chosen palette.

Haddad composes at the intersection of microtonal Italian madrigals of the 16th century and the Arab maqam tradition. Inspired by Nicola Vicentino’s Arciorgano, a 36-tone organ, Haddad pursues Vicentino’s centuries-old vision that the Arciorgano might serve musicians of all cultures.
