Pioniere der Neuen Musik III: Neue Wiener Schule

Ensemble Phoenix Basel

With great passion and dedication, the Ensemble Phoenix Basel regularly devotes itself to the music of the so-called «New Viennese School», more precisely to the Austrian composer and painter Arnold Schönberg and his two students Alban Berg and Anton Webern. It is fair to say that European New Music would have experienced a different development without these three pioneers. On the one hand, deeply rooted in Romanticism, on the other, this music literally breathes «air from another planet», to use Stefan George's phrase, whose poems were often and willingly set to music by these three composers. The «dodecaphony» («twelve-tone technique») invented by Schönberg has influenced generations of composers and was the initial spark for further style-forming tendencies (e.g. «serial music»). This programme features songs for high soprano with ensemble, framed by original instrumental pieces and arrangements of larger orchestral works, in keeping with the tradition of the «Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen» (Society for Private Musical Performances), which was founded by Schönberg in Vienna in 1918 and disbanded in 1921.
