«The Waves» – A multi-sensory performance based on Virginia Woolf

[in]operabilities

«Who is he? Who is she? I am infinitely curious and do not know what is to come», writes Virginia Woolf in her 1931 novel «The Waves». In a polyphonic stream of consciousness, the novel tells of the lifelong friendship between six different people, of intense encounters, of childhood, ageing and death.
[in]operabilities delves into Woolf's flow of language and revolves around a central scene in the novel: a reunion of friends in a restaurant. With playfulness and melancholy, the ensemble transforms «The Waves» into a multi-sensory musical theatre piece made up of words and gestures, sound, vibrations, touch and light. Six performers appear in rhythmically interwoven solos, representing different generations, worlds and styles of perception. Thoughts, dreams and utterances, slow motion and time lapse blur. Inside and outside, the characters seek contact with themselves, with others and with the world.

«The Waves» is a production of [in]operabilities in co-production with Kampnagel, Gare du Nord Basel and Radialsystem Berlin.
