Ephemeral Tangibility
«Very early on in my career as a composer, I began to reflect on the connection between the body and music, prompted by a text by Roland Barthes on Robert Schumann. Since then, this connection has been part of my thinking about music and my analysis of compositions. Even though this connection is vague and unclear, it has always been a constant for me to view a composition as a body connected to my own. Of course, reflecting on this is not part of the act of composing itself, but rather something that unfolds in the background. It is not tangible like a sound that can be clearly notated, but rather something fluid, alongside and between the sounds. It feels as though the body of the composition unfolds in these interstices. Or in the way the sounds are put together or separated from one another.

In my case, it may seem particularly paradoxical to speak of a body of the composition, as my music is often light, calm and fleeting. But this sense of the compositional body is not a consequence of many or few notes. It is a sensation that arises from a totality – a totality of sound, silence and duration. In that moment, it is always everything.»
