«Pollicino»

The children’s opera «Pollicino» («Tom Thumb») is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name: unable to feed them any longer, a father abandons his seven children in the forest to let them starve to death. Despite the support of the animals in the forest, the children end up in the house of a man-eater, from whom they manage to escape, however together with his seven daughters. Whilst fleeing through the wilderness, they learn how important solidarity and love are.

Hans Werner Henze wrote this children’s opera in 1979/80 for his festival in Montepulciano. It is a stage production for children and adults – both performers and audience members. The Orchesterschule adopts a holistic artistic approach to cross-disciplinary projects: the children can choose their own roles – whether on stage or behind the scenes.
