«prąd»

As part of the «Sonic Boom» artist-in-residence programme, eight artists and ensembles specialising in contemporary and experimental music are given the opportunity to realise their own concert formats, sound performances and music theatre productions. Over a period of two years, they will each design and present two evenings in which they can express their individual artistic approaches. Accompanied by an in-house discussion series and mentoring programme, the series provides a space for exchange between the audience, the scene and the artists.

For his second Sonic Boom concert at the Gare du Nord, Mikołaj Rytowski presents a two-part evening bringing together artists and creative practices from the UK, Poland and Switzerland. The programme centres on two distinct models of collaborative composition: a system-based work with the British artist Mark Fell, and the research and performance project ‘prąd’ with Natan Kryszk and Robin Michel.

The programme opens with a new commissioned work by Mikołaj Rytowski and Mark Fell. Together, they are developing a performative system that responds to Rytowski’s percussive practice and is based on rule-based processes and their sonic unfolding.

In the second part, the trio comprising Mikołaj Rytowski, Natan Kryszk and Robin Michel will present the first public research and performance phase of «prąd» (Polish for «current»). The project explores electricity as both a physical phenomenon and an artistic medium. Drawing on mechanical, acoustic and electronic processes, the artists investigate the multifaceted relationships between sound, movement, material and perception.

The performance at the Gare du Nord marks the first phase of the project’s presentation and offers an experience of transnational artistic exchange. At the same time, for Mikołaj Rytowski, it connects two formative places in his life: Poland, where he grew up, and Basel, where he now lives and works.
