Those who still breath

As part of the «Sonic Boom» artist-in-residence programme, eight artists and ensembles specialising in contemporary and experimental music are given the opportunity to realise their own concert formats, sound performances and music theatre productions. Over a period of two years, they will each design and present two evenings in which they can express their individual artistic approaches. Accompanied by an in-house discussion series and mentoring programme, the series provides a space for exchange between the audience, the scene and the artists.

The development of our capacity for social interaction and empathy has had a decisive impact on human evolution. Even though the origins of human solidarity cannot be precisely dated, one thing is certain: it is deeply rooted in human nature. It is passed down through memories, bodies, and gestures, evolving over time and continuing to shape the way we live together to this day.
In the age of hyperconnectivity, however, a paradox emerges: While people are constantly connected to one another, four out of ten young people report feeling lonely. What if, in the future, the only possibility for human connection lay in the metaverse? In this space, two bodies move through fragments of human experience: gestures of closeness, love, grief, conflict, and joy. They become traces of a collective memory whose language remains to be rediscovered.

Ludmilla Mercier’s performance «Those Who Still Breathe» embarks on a choreographic journey through what connects people. Contemporary dance, sound gestures, electronic music, and visual elements come together. The movements of the two bodies themselves become sound material. Recorded voices, archival fragments, and artificial soundscapes create a futuristic environment in which human memory meets the artificial.
