As part of the «Sonic Boom» artist-in-residence programme, eight artists and ensembles specialising in contemporary and experimental music are given the opportunity to realise their own concert formats, sound performances and music theatre productions. Over a period of two years, they will each design and present two evenings in which they can express their individual artistic approaches. Accompanied by an in-house discussion series and mentoring programme, the series provides a space for exchange between the audience, the scene and the artists.
Starting with the questions «What if?» and «Where next?», Phoebe Bognár combines concert, performative essay, installation, and experimental practice into a hybrid format in «vessels». Together with Sharon Chan and Charles Kwong, she explores the ubiquity of the flute and how it can be expanded. The focus is on the flute’s potential to continually reappear in new forms and contexts, as well as through various teaching, playing, and performance practices. Through a collaborative process, the project explores how the instrument can be reimagined beyond institutionally defined boundaries without losing sight of its roots. At the intersection of theory, practice, and installation, «vessels» opens up a space for critical engagement with the instrument’s development and its role in contemporary culture. In the process, new perspectives emerge on the relationships between the flute, people, context, and community.
