Im Fluss

«Im Fluss» turns its attention to Greece and brings together works from the 20th and 21st centuries. The focus is on Iannis Xenakis and Nikos Skalkottas, who in different ways seek new sonic and structural orders beyond traditional forms.

In Xenakis’s «Dhipli Zyia» (1951) for violin and cello density, friction and movement define the musical action. In «Ikhoor» (1978) for string trio, too, the instruments become fluid fields of sound, characterised by glissandi, shifting articulations and flows of energy. In his Duo for Violin and Viola (1938) and String Trio No. 2 (1935), Skalkottas combines influences from the Second Viennese School with rhythmic conciseness and his own chamber music language.

Georges Aperghis’ «Faux Mouvement» (1995) focuses on movement and perception, playing with shifts and expectations. A new commissioned work by the Basel-based Greek composer Eleni Ralli brings this exploration into the present day and adds a contemporary perspective to the programme.
