Sonic Boom – Parametastrings

As part of the «Sonic Boom» artist-in-residence programme, eight artists and ensembles specialising in contemporary and experimental music are given the opportunity to realise their own concert formats, sound performances and music theatre productions. Over a period of two years, they will each design and present two evenings in which they can express their individual artistic approaches. Accompanied by an in-house discussion series and mentoring programme, the series provides a space for exchange between the audience, the scene and the artists.
For this «Sonic Boom» evening, the Percaso String Quartet and Carmel Curiel are working with a system combining sound, gravity and movement. Four bows suspended from the ceiling are connected to the string instruments and the musicians’ bodies. The bows are attached in different ways: some are controlled directly by the players, whilst others form part of a system of dependency in which the movement of one instrument triggers the movement of another. This creates a delicate interweaving that can only exist through precise interplay.
A constant interplay unfolds between control and surrender, autonomy and dependence. In dialogue with Unsuk Chin’s «ParaMetaString», this collaborative project combines sound, gravity and movement, revealing the close intertwining of the performers, instruments and musical material.
