Sonic Boom – Fernando Manassero & guests

«Sonic Boom» is the Gare du Nord's new Artist-in-Residence programme. Eight emerging artists from the fields of contemporary and experimental music, sound performance and music theatre are given space and support for their artistic development.
Over a period of two years, they will each create and present two Cartes Blanches in which they can express their individual artistic approaches. The programme is accompanied by a discourse and mentoring format.

«La Minka» is a composer-performer project for a full-length performance with four guest musicians from different artistic backgrounds and Fernando Manassero. The project is inspired by a collaborative working tradition from the Andean culture of South America, which is translated into a musical practice.

In Quechua, a language of the Andes, «minka» refers to asking for help in exchange for a promise of reciprocity. Traditionally, this was a social work system in which communities came together to build houses, bridges, or communal spaces. This practice is still cultivated today in various regions of South America.

The individual musical language of the participating musicians is a central component of the piece. Instead of writing exclusively for them, Fernando Manassero works with their input and develops the musical material from their respective identities.
Fernando Manassero's task is therefore to create musical situations and structure the resulting material in a score in such a way that the contributions of all participants are integrated. The focus is on those moments in which the musical personalities resonate and enrich each other – as a musical expression of «minka» as a collective practice.

The concert ranges from solo to quartet formations.
Deeply processed cello waves coming from afar contrast with concise close-up sounds produced with homemade instruments. Old-fashioned-sounding synthetic FM bells appear on raw, unstable rhythms from floppy drive motors, creating a multi-layered, constantly changing soundscape.
