Farewell event after 18 years of «Dialog»

After eighteen years of intensive curatorial work, Marcus Weiss bids farewell to the «Dialog» series at Gare du Nord with this evening. As host, musician and presenter, he has had a decisive influence on the concert series and promoted the exchange of ideas about contemporary music with artists and audiences alike. The concert marks the festive conclusion of this special chapter.

Marcus Weiss studied saxophone at the Basel Academy of Music under Iwan Roth and philosophy and saxophone at Northwestern University in Chicago under Frederick L. Hemke. In 1989, he was awarded the Soloist Prize by the Swiss Musicians' Association.
As a soloist, he performs with numerous European orchestras and ensembles. As a chamber musician, he performs with the Trio Accanto and the saxophone ensemble Xasax Paris. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with numerous composers who have written works especially for him, including Mark Andre, Georges Aperghis, John Cage, Péter Eötvös, Beat Furrer, Vinko Globokar, Georg Friedrich Haas, Toshio Hosokawa, Yu Kuwabara, Hanspeter Kyburz, Helmut Lachenmann, Misato Mochizuki, Giorgio Netti, Stefan Prins, Rebecca Saunders, Salvatore Sciarrino, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Nadir Vassena.
In 2010, Bärenreiter Verlag published his specialist book «The Techniques of Saxophone Playing».

Marcus Weiss has been Professor of Saxophone and Chamber Music at the University of Music in Basel since 1995. Together with Sarah Sun and Yaron Deutsch, he directs the Master’s programme «Creative Interpretation in New Music».
