A Primer for Cadavers / Limbus

Nikel & special guest Noa Frenkel / HYPER DUO

Double concert with Nikel & HYPER DUO: Both ensembles present their new projects: «A Primer for Cadavers» with world premieres by John Menoud and Rebecca Saunders echoes Nikel's genetic trait of duality. HYPER DUO brings to the stage «Limbus» by Pierre Jodlowski, an immersive multimedia show inspired by Henri Michaux's hallucinogenic world.

Ensemble Nikel takes a close look at its genetic trait of duality. From the obvious classical-popular instrumental affiliation to the constant electro-acoustic sound play to the contradictory aesthetic poles that exist in the repertoire, the ensemble aims to develop a new self-portrait. The programme includes a world premiere of John Menoud's «Abraxas» paired with the Swiss premiere of Rebecca Saunders' piece for Nikel and contralto Noa Frenkel's «Us Dead Talk Love».

Two works by Henri Michaux, «L'infini Turbulent» (1957) and «Connaissance par les gouffres» (1961) form the starting point for HYPER DUO's «Limbus»: an immersive, poetic and kaleidoscopic musical performance. Michaux's experiments with psychotropic substances raise the question of our perception of reality and our ability to be satisfied with it. When Michaux slips into hallucinated worlds, he provides us with a sum of alternatives from his experiments that cannot leave us indifferent. For if we are supposedly free in our civilisation, free to perceive the world, isn't the opposite happening? In an ultra-digitalised life controlled by social networks, we are all in the same boat, gradually replacing the experience of reality with a constant abundance of images.
