Friendly Takeover 7 – Marie Delprat

«Life is sick»

In a live electronic set, French performer, composer and flute player Marie Delprat develops antagonistic sound atmospheres that explore aesthetic boundaries. Inspired by Sylvia Plath's poem «Epitaph For Fire And Flower» and the photographs of Angel Albarran, she translates images of threatening natural forces into striking surreal musical atmospheres.

«I turned to photography early on, that's how I entered into a relationship with the world. But at some point words began to fail me, so I turned to poetry. These connections have stayed with me until today: My music contains many strong visual aspects, but it also always plays with the medium of text.
In this sense, I have recently been intensively exploring the texts of writer Sylvia Plath and the images of photographer Angel Albarran - a process that helps me to translate fascinating hypothetical and surreal images of a near future into music.
The poems ‹Suspending an ocean wave›, for example, or ‹Anchoring the air to the ground› by Sylvia Plath, in which she makes the unimaginable comprehensible, make me feel the invisible, the incredible. And in ‹Epitaph for fire and flower› she shows that exactly what we need to live is also what kills us. We could not survive without water, but the ocean is an aggressive and cruel force, a fundamental and dangerous element of nature. In the recurring images of storms by the sea, sharks stranded in gardens and windows shattered by raging winds, ocean waves and liquid air are ominous signs that reflect the current dramatic and catastrophic climate crisis. Yes, it's true: Life is sick.»
