Today's Czech Republic with its metropolis Prague has been part of the cultural centre of Europe for centuries and with its great composers such as Dvořák, Smetana, Janáček, Martinů etc. has had an enormous influence on the entire musical scene. Their works are a fixture in concert halls all over the world. Music-making is a widespread phenomenon in the Czech cultural area: «what a Czech or Bohemian, is a musician» says a Czech saying not for nothing. That is why chamber music also enjoys a great tradition there. The Mondrian Ensemble has chosen four works from this repertoire to span a broad and contrasting range. The programme sets its focus with the Piano Quartet by Martinu and the Duo by Leoš Janáček. The Bohemian-born Gustav Mahler opens the programme with his only piano quartet movement. For the 2016 «Music Olomouc» Festival, the Czech composer Marek Keprt wrote a new work for the Mondrian Ensemble, which will receive its first performance in Switzerland in the programme «POHÁDKA/Märchen» (en.: fairy tale).
