ATTACCA – Festival for Contemporary Music

«DROPS» – Carmel Curiel (Composition)

The concert «Drops» explores the musical and conceptual dimensions of falling and the tension of gravity as an elementary, playful yet fundamental, and sometimes violent force. All connected by the same idea, three pieces – differing in instrumentation, medium, and format – will be presented: «Hängt Talui Ab» for ensemble and shadow theatre; «Sustain, Release, Attack» for five flutists, video, and electronics, a collaborative work with Daniel Fill; and «For now, time is a duration of a thought» for extended piano and electronics.

The concert connects visual movement with musical anticipation and with the sonic characteristics of a dropped or falling object – on piano strings, on water, and on other surfaces. It asks what it might mean, musically, to overcome gravity.

As part of «ATTACCA – Festival für aktuelle Musik» at the FHNW Academy of Music in Basel, students from the fields of audio design, composition, open creation and contemporary music will present their current artistic projects. The programme includes original compositions, performances, improvisations and works by contemporary composers. The concerts will take place over several days in various formats and with different line-ups.
