Using various instruments made of simple machines, two musicians and their mechanical movements become a metaphor for everyday, repetitive work and automatic operational processes.
The piece revolves around the physical human capabilities that are challenged by the constant interaction with purposeless machines. Throughout the piece, the two musicians create sounds by manipulating a series of machines that have no function other than the sound they produce.
On stage, the work evolves between electric sound exploration and physical performance within a sound world generated from electromagnetic and photovoltaic phenomena in contact with the body.
«This work is part of a series of pieces in which I use different artistic methods to explore the complex relationship between human labour and the inevitable future of technological unemployment.»
In «Voltaic Routines», the musician as a machine frenetically and obsessively manipulates other machines, never realising that these machines, like himself, are useless.
