Friendly Takeover 5 – Miguel Ángel García Martín

«Aufbau/Abbau»

Miguel Ángel García Martín celebrates his 10th anniversary as a freelance drummer.

«I love and enjoy my work, the variety, the diversity and all the possibilities my instrument offers. But all that glitters is not gold. My instrument brings with it unavoidable, exhausting, time-consuming and physically demanding activities.
I am talking about what for many instrumentalists is a routine of minutes or even seconds; something not shared with the audience, something private and usually something solitary. I'm talking about setting up and taking down. Until the drum sculptures are on stage, no sound can be played, no lights can be set up, no sound check can be made - no concert can take place. Conversely, no room can be left and no sip of beer drunk until all the instruments have been dismantled and loaded into the car.
As self-therapy and to celebrate my 10th anniversary, I decided to work through my «trauma» musically and present this unknown problem of my profession to the audience in the form of a scenic-musical performance.»
