«Das irdische Leben» frei nach Gustav Mahler

Thom Luz & Ensemble

«Symphony just means to me: Building a world with all the means at one's disposal - or several worlds that are in conflict with each other...» noted Gustav Mahler in 1903. In Thom Luz's opening production, the world is also rebuilt with simple means: Four people are stranded in an empty room and can no longer escape from it – except perhaps by singing. So, singing, they plan their escape – or their remaining trapped. From spotlights, loudspeakers, exhausted androids, lost pianos and the presence and absence of an ensemble singing and making music, surprising changes of perspective emerge on supposedly familiar musical material. A short world history in sounds. A mixed canon for three ruin builders and a noise cellist, torn between superhuman jubilation and world-embracing sadness, in which Mahler's musical cosmos can be mirrored anew as well as the connection between world weariness and optimism of change.

The evening is divided into three parts:

  1. the world before man
  2. the people
  3. the world after the people.

And as in real life, there is no break.

This opens up an associative space about the life of the earth and its strange inhabitants, between musical Robinsonade and abysmal Beckett waiting room.
