«Le sacre du printemps» (en.: The Spring Sacrifice) by Igor Stravinsky is a music-historical milestone of the 20th century. The plot of the ballet music, which was first performed in 1913, leads to a human sacrificial rite intended to trigger the cyclical awakening of nature in spring.
Today, a good 100 years later, the question of the necessity of a sacrifice for nature arises under different circumstances: Global protest movements urge us to make sacrifices with the utmost urgency in order not to irreparably destroy the natural cycles and orders as the basis of human existence. But the simultaneous glorification of individual freedom effectively calls into question any acts of renunciation or even sacrifice for the benefit of others. So what to do?
In «Le Sacre du printemps», 4 performers question their own willingness to sacrifice and that of the audience: What are we willing to sacrifice? Can sacrifices make a difference? And who or what are the victims of our actions?
