As part of the Sonic Boom artist-in-residence programme, eight artists and ensembles specialising in contemporary and experimental music are given the opportunity to realise their own concert formats, sound performances and music theatre productions. Over a period of two years, they will each design and present two evenings in which they can express their individual artistic approaches. Accompanied by an in-house discussion series and mentoring programme, the series provides a space for exchange between the audience, the scene and the artists.
«The Phantom in the Room» is a staged concert that transforms an intimate white room into a cathedral of shadows, turning the setting into a feverish dream. It begins with a gaze into the eyes of the shadow. From there, a space opens up in which the human voice breaks free from its physical origins and becomes an untamed, freely floating phantom.
As the voice is amplified, the boundaries between body and surroundings blur. In an intense sonic exorcism, the singer expels her whispering seductress and asserts her presence and self-determination. From the trembling fragility of a single breath grows an overwhelming storm of sound that seems set to shatter the space. The reality of the white room dissolves. What remains is the immediate, physical force of the phantom within the space.
