«Hidden Heartache» explores musical perception from a deaf perspective, thereby placing the origin of movement at the center. Between the concert grand piano and the dancing body, between vibration and gesture, sound occurs not only in the air but also through vibrating bodies.

Two deaf and two hearing performers develop a tapestry of visual rhythms through their movements. Music and dance are part of an ongoing process of mutual shaping and realignment. When does dance become music, and when does music become dance?

This production by the ox&öl collective, in collaboration with choreographer Lee Méir, uses body sound transducers to make music physically tangible. The compositions by Ailís Ní Ríain and Julie Herndon—developed from both deaf and hearing compositional perspectives—unfold through the movements of the bodies.

«Hidden Heartache» creates a shared space of experience in which hearing appears as a physical experience and music reveals itself as a choreography of resonance.
