For three decades, the Basel music festival BScene has stood for the diversity of the local scene. Under the anniversary motto «Basel wird BScene», the festival opens this year's edition with BARANY at the Gare du Nord.
A dark, melodious cloud envelops the senses when the last note has faded away. BARANY's music is restrained and unpretentious, yet there is always a lurking undertone, a pull from the depths.
BARANY's voice glides effortlessly like silk between tender and rough, artfully layered and often bittersweet. Memories of Portishead and Radiohead are awakened, but the songs remain unmistakably unique. The extravagant songwriting spans wide arcs of harmony, follows intricate dramaturgy and fills the chest with vitality and authenticity. The door to BARANY's world opens to all those who are ready to fall backwards into it.
Since their first live performances in 2017, the band has released their debut album «Lights Disappear» (2019), performed at renowned international festivals and toured Switzerland and Germany. In 2021, BARANY was nominated for their Nirvana cover of «Heart-Shaped Box» at the Berlin Music Video Awards. The British-Swiss act's international collaborations include producer Dan Austin (UK; Massive Attack, Biffy Clyro, among others), re:dasein (Germany) and mastering engineer Matt Colton (UK; Thom Yorke, James Blake, Sampha, among others). After BARANY supported trip-hop legends Morcheeba on their EU tour in 2022, their new album «Nanztal» was released on 13 October 2023. It was widely praised by the press, including Sonic Seducer, Gala.de, nTV and DIFFUS. The band also released the musical short film «PROLOGUE», which was shown in Swiss cinemas and set to live music.
