«Magda Toffler oder ein Versuch über das Schweigen» (Magda Toffler or an Attempt at Silence) – Reading 4:30 p.m.
With «Magda Toffler» Nikitin delves deep into the hidden layers of 20th-century Europe. At the centre is the family history of the eponymous character Magda Toffler, the first woman to qualify as a professor of chemistry in Czechoslovakia. Around her, Nikitin weaves a narrative about hiding and concealment, family secrets and the gaps between words, as a counterpoint to the story about his father. In doing so, the author also questions the possibilities of non-fiction.
«Versuch über das Sterben» – Reading 11:00 a.m.
In 2017, a year after his father's death, author Boris Nikitin began writing down the story of his father's ALS disease. The disease had taken its toll quickly, with less than a year passing between diagnosis and death. Very early on, his father considered assisted suicide, an EXIT. A statement that changed everything.
In «Versuch über das Sterben» (Essay on Dying), Nikitin combines the story of this outing with the story of his own coming out twenty years earlier and develops a tenderly radical text about what it means to dare to go public, break taboos and show vulnerability.
